The National

신시내티와 오하이오에서 1999년에 결성되었다. 지금은 뉴욕의 브룩클린에 베이스를 두고 활동하고 있다. The National 의 가사는 바리톤 출신의 Matt Berninger가 짓고 부르고 있으며 "어둡고, 멜랑꼴리하고, 해석하기 어려운" 것으로 묘사되고 있다. Matt이외에도 두 쌍의(?) 형제가 더 있다. 쌍둥이인 Aaron(Guitar and Keyboard)과 Bryce Dessner(Guitar), 형제지간인 Scott(Bass)와 Bryan Devendorf(Drums)가 멤버 구성원들이다.

The National은 Joy Division이나 Leonard Cohen, Wilco, Nick Cave&The bad seeds와 비교되곤 한단다. 밴드 이름이 'National'인 이유는 이 단어가 함의하고 있는 뜻이 하나도 없다고 여기기 때문이고, 그 자체가 상서로우면서도 의미없어서 쓰게 되었다고 한다.
